Rick
Engineering Company’s Urban Design and Planning Group is an award winner for their design submittal for downtown
Carlsbad
commissioned by the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce. The design
team used the warm, bright elements of this beach community
to create the vibrant atmosphere of a “village within
a city.”
The design vision is centered
on an outstanding public realm, building on the existing network
of streets framed and activated by the Coaster Train Station.
In addition, the award-winning design focuses on new mixed-use
housing with lower level retail, the weaving of the new public
spaces together with the addition of streetscapes which accommodate
outdoor seating, colonnades, balconies, markets and cafes.
The project involved
working closely with design professionals and The City of Carlsbad’s
existing design guidelines to develop a plan that would create
new pedestrian linkages, strong transit oriented design (TOD),
distinct architecture, and mixed-use presence to invigorate
the project area.
