Rick Engineering
Company was retained to provide design development,
preparation of construction documents and construction
administrative services for a 2.2-acre neighborhood park.
The park site is nestled in a residential neighborhood
completely surrounded by homes and linked to the pedestrian
trail system (Paseo) of the Otay Ranch community. The City’s
park program primarily included a tot-lot (play equipment)
for two child age groups; 1-4 & 5-12 years old. Additional
park program amenities included picnic tables, benches,
barbeques, a drinking fountain, a bike rack, pathway lighting,
a large open lawn area and a centralized computer irrigation
system. The challenge was to develop an aesthetically pleasing
park design that would be inviting as a social gathering
place for families with children of all ages. Special emphasis
was placed on the playground design as it relates to child
development and its function as an environment that encourages
children of all levels of ability to meet, interact, and
play together. Compliance with the Americans with Disabilities
Act Accessibility Guidelines for Play Areas, playground
safety regulations and City standards were also key issues,
which were considered during the design process.
