CIVIL ENGINEERING is the backbone of RICK ENGINEERING COMPANY. That was true in 1955 when the Company was founded and it remains true today. In the ’50s however, the Civil Engineering Division focused principally on physical issues of land development. That emphasis has changed considerably.

Especially today, understanding and navigating the development approval process is critical to success. So is familiarity with the highly technical issues and state-of-the-art computer-based tools that are essential to modern civil engineering.

Our Civil Engineering Division can take a project through planning and zoning, preliminary design, mapping/platting, and ultimately to the final design stage where the project is ready for bid and construction. Thereafter, we provide construction support through plan clarification, contractor and field surveyor coordination, and as-needed plan revision.

Rick Engineering Company’s over 400-person staff includes more than 80 licensed and registered engineers who operate in our San Diego, Riverside, Orange, Sacramento, San Luis Obispo, Bakersfield, Phoenix, and Tucson offices. The Company has completed more than 10,000 separate projects, including:

• Single-family and Multi-Family Residential Communities
• Commercial and Office Developments
• Mixed Use Projects
• Industrial Parks/Facilities
• Golf Courses and Recreational Projects
• Retail Centers and Service Stations
• Restaurant Sites
• Infill/Community Redevelopment
• Marina and Waterfront Developments

Sample projects include:

Rancho Carrillo Community - Carlsbad, CA: Rick Engineering Company prepared the Master Plan for this 600-acre new community that included 2,000 residential units, an elementary school site, a park, a community center, and a day-care center. The Master Plan preserves 250 acres of open space, with approximately one mile of public trails. Designs were supplied for three miles of major roadway and one mile of trunk sewer line.

Sabre Springs Community - San Diego, CA: Rick Engineering Company has served as prime planning and civil engineering consultant to Pardee Construction Company on this 1,500-acre master-planned community since 1986. Preliminary and final designs were completed for over 3,000 single- and multi-family residential units, as well as 35 acres of commercial and 72 acres of industrial development. The project entailed such technical and terrain-related issues as steep hillsides, significant drainage courses, and major street improvements.

EastLake Residential Development/Golf Course Community - Chula Vista, CA: This mixed-use master-planned community of 3,200 acres accommodates 12,000 dwelling units, 380 acres of employment center, 80 acres of schools, 100 acres of parks, and 100 acres of commercial development. Civil engineering work involved the design of a major state highway within an area of archaeological and biological constraints; major soil problems; hillside and ridgeline development restrictions; flood control; water reclamation; and wastewater management issues. The design of 10.7 miles of a reclaimed water system included 20-inch, 16-inch, and 12-inch mains.
